Quick-Word Handbook for Everyday Writers

Quick-Word is a student workbook. Each page contains a list of words starting with a letter of the alphabet. The words chosen are high frequency words. A student can use the handbook as a quick reference to check the spelling of a word. It allows students to keep track of words that are difficult for them to spell. The text could also be adapted for short phonics exercises or drills.

Quick-Word is an uncluttered workbook containing lists of words used frequently in writing. The pages are dedicated to each letter of the alphabet, with blank spaces to add personal words. Homophones are highlighted with an asterisk in each list, and sets of homophone sentences are included at the back of the book, along with some common abbreviations, numbers and suffixes. For ESL students, the workbook would be useful for students who are already familiar with a range of vocabulary words with a focus on spelling and writing. Tips for using the workbook can be found at the publisher’s website:

I really liked the whole publication - and I think it would be useful for CLB 2 and up. The amount of words for each letter are a bit overwhelming without any context so I certainly wouldn't use it in a literacy class, unless the spoken English was very high and listening comprehension was already good.

I liked the reference section at the back and the spelling help for plurals and verb endings is very practical.I think students could be referred here when they are doing writing assignments.

I might do a letter dictation once a week, using some words from the booklet as spelling words. These high frequency words are important to know how to spell. Alternately, students could pick or be assigned 5 (or however many) and make sentences using the words correctly.
